FAQs

How to become a childminder in London?

One of the key principles of a childminder job in London is adhering to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which sets standards for the learning and development of children between 0-5 years old.

In order to be a professional childminder in London, you must be aged 18 years or older. You will need premises or a home, where you are able to safely look after children – a garden isn’t essential, but it certainly helps. Parents will often give preference to childminders who are near train stations and local schools as it helps with drop-offs. The property and your business will both need to have appropriate insurance too.

In terms of education, you will need a childcare qualification which is approved by your local council. Get in contact with your local council to find out the available courses in your area. In addition to this, you must have undertaken a pediatric first aid course as well as training in safeguarding children. You should also consider training in food hygiene, this is important when you’re catering to young children.

Alongside paperwork for registering with Ofsted and Public Liability Insurance, you will also need to make a Business insurance policy for parents which parents will need to sign before taking care of their children. This includes safety, a risk assessment should there be an emergency and general information parents and you should be mutually aware of, for example, an allergy. Often insurance companies will provide templates to help you make this.

How many children can I care for?

In accordance with the law, qualified childminders can care for up to six children under the age of eight, depending on space available. However, no more than three of these children can be under the age of five years old, and only one can be under the age of one-year-old at any given time. These numbers include your own children.

There is some exception to the rations if you can show all the children’s needs are met, but the number of children you can look after is not negotiable unless supplementary help is brought in, for example, an assistant childminder. In order to manage childcare effectively, childminders are not allowed to look after children above the age of eight.

How much does a childminder in London earn?

How much you earn depends on whether it’s a full time or part-time job, how many children you look after, and your location. A childminder in London can expect to earn more. The earnings of a childminder in London can vary depending on several factors, such as experience, qualifications, location, and the number of children they care for. As of 2022, the average hourly rate for a childminder in London was around £6-£9 per child.

Childminders often charge a higher rate for before and after school care, and they may offer discounts for siblings or when caring for multiple children from the same family. Keep in mind that childminders set their own rates, so some may charge more or less than the average.

Additionally, childminders' earnings can be affected by factors such as the number of hours they work per week, whether they provide additional services (e.g., meal preparation or transportation), and if they offer care during school holidays.

It's important to research the current market rates in your specific area of London to get a more accurate idea of potential earnings for a childminder.

Regarding payment, most parents will set up a direct debit for payment. If you choose to become registered for tax-free childcare, you will receive payment through your local council.

What are the qualifications for a childminder in London?

When registering to become a childminder in London, you will require a childcare qualification as well as training in safety and safeguarding. If you already have an Early Years qualification, you may not need this training, however, it may be helpful to do the training. Many courses cover specific modules on creating successful and safe childminder settings which may be inspiring.

At a minimum, to register as a childminder in London you’ll need:

  • A childcare qualification (approved by your local council)

  • A pediatric First Aid Certificate (12-hour course)

  • Training in food hygiene

  • Training in safeguarding children

Nanny vs childminder

Did you know that childminders often enjoy a higher degree of flexibility compared to nannies? While nannies typically work in the family’s home, childminders can offer care in their own homes or the homes of the children they care for. This distinction can influence your work environment and the nature of your daily activities. You might even consider taking on an assistant to expand your services.
